•Loss of iodine content in packed salt was increasing with duration of storage.•Not all brands maintain the content of iodine in salt according to Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institute (BSTI).•Consumer satisfaction levels was significantly associated with iodine content of salt, income and educational status of consumers (p < 0.05).
