Medical products from stem cells

The overall purpose of regenerative medicine is to replace diseased or damaged cells with live functional cells. Stem cells open new avenues in the field of regenerative medicine and are being widely explored for the treatment of many diseases. Stem cells and stem cell–derived products offer a new approach in personalized medicine. Both stem cells and stem cell–derived products intended for clinical use should be produced via a robust manufacturing process. Strict quality control measures should be followed to ensure a consistent and reproducible final product. This chapter summarizes the potential application of stem cells in treating various diseases and the currently approved stem cell products that are available on the market. The chapter also discusses the existing regulations and guidelines associated with the use of stem cells or stem cell–derived products for clinical applications.
