•HBCUs are vital to increasing representation of Blacks as registered nurses.•First-time NCLEX-RN pass rate for the total sample was 91.58%.•Increasing Black and Latinx BSN graduates at HBCUs is essential.•There were no significant differences in pass rates among racial/ethnic groups.•Child health predicted NCLEX-RN outcomes among both TBSN and ABSN graduates.
