Environmental sustainability and footprints of global aquaculture

•Country-level energy, water, and carbon footprint of aquaculture are quantified.•Global aquaculture is not sustainable from a food-energy-water-carbon perspective.•80% of countries with at least 2 FEWC sectors falling into the low sustainable zone.•The nexus approach shows promise to track the sustainability of global aquaculture.
