•WS2/N-doped carbon composite was prepared with biomass gelatin as carbon and nitrogen source.•WS2 nanoparticles were dispersed and embedded into gelatin-derived hierarchical porous carbon network.•The confinement of carbon, enlarged surface area, and improved conductivity resulted in enhanced capacitive property.
