•Various PRFs show good fuel flexibility under isobaric combustion conditions.•The pilot injection is a key factor dominates the following combustion features.•Four or even more injections are beneficial to promote engine performance.•Alcohol blends also demonstrate fuel flexibility with lower engine efficiency.•The disadvantage of the lower LHV could be mitigated by using more nozzles.
