Inelastic scattering of 162-MeV pions by /sup 14/N

The inelastic scattering of 162-MeV pions by $^{14}\mathrm{N}$ has been studied over the angular range 35\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{} to 115\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{} in the laboratory system. The data were analyzed with a model which incorporates shell model wave functions into a distorted wave impulse approximation. Reduced transition probabilities obtained for a number of low-lying states are compared to previous data to validate the model. Among new assignments and shell model descriptions presented for several higher excited states is an assignment for the yrast ${5}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ state.
