•HIV and SARS-CoV-2 coinfection in Chinese adults.•Virus shedding and cytokines of 4 coinfected cases and 20 HIV-negative controls.•HIV patients had similar respiratory shedding but lower IL-10 and NT-pro-BNP levels.•All 4 PLWH patients had SARS-CoV-2 detected from faecal samples.•Faecal shedding duration of patient A, B, C and D were at least 9, 10, 33, 11 days
