Surgical treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma with portal vein tumor thrombus

Objective To study the value of surgical treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)with portal vein tumor thrombus(PVTT).Methods From Jan.2000 to Dec.2006,63 cases of HCC with portal vein tumor thrombus undergoing hepatectomy and portal vein tumor thrombi extraction were retrospectively reviewed,and divided into three groups according to the different treatments:integrated treatment group(n=21),PVTT treatment group(n=12),alleviative group(n=30).Results The median survival time in integrated treatment group,PVTT treatment group and alleviative group was 12.7,7.4 and 4.3 months respectively with the difference being significant among the three groups(P0.05).Conclusion Surgical intervention is effective in the treatment of HCC with PVTT.
