Abstract
The saturation of the transformer leads to abnormality as the device enters the nonlinear mode of operation. One such condition is ferroresonance in the transformer which has resulted in (2 - 4) pu overvoltage and overcurrent. The saturated transformer can initiate any one of the four modes of ferroresonance depending on initial conditions and circuit parameters. An overvoltage of 1.55 pu has been generated under ferroresonance in a single phase transformer using Rudenberg's graphical method. The experimentation on a laboratory transformer reveals that the change in third and fifth harmonic components from linear to saturation region could also be considered as the indication of fundamental ferroresonance. Also, the mitigation results show that there is a substantial change observed in the harmonic components. Total Harmonic distortion (THD) of primary current has been reduced from 74.98% to 21.35%. It has been observed that 10% loss occurs in the conventional mitigation of transformer. The prediction of jump voltages during ferroresonance is proposed with the known values of capacitance connected to the saturable transformer using graphical methods.
