Abstract
Objective: The purpose of this study is to evaluate validity and reliability of Turkish versions of the Nurses’ Professional Values Scale (NPVS). Methods: This study was performed methodologically. The data was collected with the Nurses’ Professional Values Scale developed by Darlene Weis and Mary Jane Schank. It was allowed by the authors for using the NPVS. This study’s population included 2000 nurses with Bachelor’s or higher degree at nursing who lived in Istanbul. The sample of the study included 1047 volunteer nurses and written permission was taken from their institutions. Language equivalence of the scale was provided. Experts’ opinions were taken about the content validity of the scale. Reliability of the scale was determined with the test-retest reliability, item-total correlation and internal consistency analysis. Construct validity of the scale was analyzed with Principal component factor analysis. Results: The scale was filled by 168 students attending the last year of graduate level nursing twice at an interval of fifteen days. It was determined that test-retest correlation coefficient regarding each item of the scale was between .22 and .53, and Cronbach’s alpha coefficient regarding both the scale’s test and its retest was .96. It was determined that item-total correlation coefficient of the scale was filled by nurses (N=1047) changed between .36 and .66; its Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was .95 and its average point was 181.05±21.17. Five factors were identified which were eigenvalues greater than 1 and explained 50.99% of total variance as a result of factor analysis study regarding the NPVS. Factor analysis revealed that the number of item of the scale has fallen from 44 to 31. Factors were called as human dignity, (11 items), responsibility (7 items), action (5 items), safety (4 items) and autonomy (4 items). Conclusion: It was determined that NPVS was a valid and reliable scale. Its version with 44- item can be used to measure ethical point of view of nurses, and version with 31- item can be used to measure nurses’ values in Turkey. Key words: Nursing, professional values, ethics, Nurses’ Professional Values Scale, NPVS
