The transformation proceeds as a two-step process consisting of an initiatory acid-catalyzed coupling reaction between N-acyliminium ions and 1,3-dicarbonyls followed by a phosphorus pentoxide or sulfuric acid-promoted intramolecular Friedel-Crafts acylation.
