Abstract
Manage inventory resources avoiding the lack of medical supplies and medicines are undoubtedly the main challenge in hospitals. The lack of material either for lack of financial resources, failures in forecasting applications, management attention, failure of suppliers, among others, can have serious consequences to patients in intensive care units (ICU), increasing the risks associated with lack of material essential in patient care and the occurrence of health-related infections (HAIs). This case study aimed to analyze the flow of materials requests at different administrative levels and supply failures of the inputs of an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a tertiary public hospital in periods of occurrence of HAIs through surveys and documentary analysis of the cases registered in the unit in 2014. according to the criticality of the missing material to be used in the sector, it was possible to generate a report to the Hospital Infection Control Subcommittee and the administrative sector, to assist in emergency procurement and distribution the basic materials for the support, and thereby minimize the occurrence of adverse events and increasing therefore the satisfaction of professional and patient safety. After analyzing the distribution of 164 items, these were regrouped according to a score based on the classification system in ABC and XYZ categories. There were no inputs in categorized AX (expensive and low criticality), while supply failures involved about 50% of inputs classified in CZ (cheap and high criticality).
