Abstract
The incompatibility of electric and electronic devices to operate in European and North American electrical networks demands the use of frequency converters utilization that guarantees proper device operation on both systems. The design and implementation of a 60 Hz (North American standard)-to-50 Hz (European standard) frequency converter prototype is a viable and low cost proposal. This proposal applies electronic design concepts and an adequate technical and scientific design that identifies the requirement for the prototype, including: filtering of conducted emissions generated on the electric network itself; preventing prototype noise injection; AC voltage conversion and voltage rectifier, and designing of commuted mode inverter design to generate a sinusoidal alternating voltage with a specific frequency. All these elements have as a result a compliant system that meets the objective of the proposed design. Output power is guaranteed to support an average domestic electronic device. Finally, the prototype implementation cost is quite low compared to those that are available in market offering similar functionalities. In Ecuador, electronic devices are homologated to operate with North American standard; however, those that are brought by user without compatibility for local electric supply, become useless. Therefore, the prototype becomes a practical solution to be considered in a scale production for domestic and industrial utilization.
