Abstract
The size of a power distribution transformer will reduce by increasing the operating frequency. That can be achieved by using power electronic converters on both primary and secondary sides. A model of a power electronic transformer (PET) is presented based on a three-level converter in this work. The proposed model was simulated by using MATLAB/Simulink. The simulation results show that the proposed PET not only provided the voltage transformation and isolation as a conventional transformer but also improved the power quality, providing additional capabilities to alleviate transient power quality problems and increase the transformer functionality. The simulation and experimental work have been carried out to verify the PET performance and controllers, and validate the design of the proposed PET.
