•HSS model and FEM method was applied to investigate the behavior of diaphragm wall.•FLNN was applied to estimate the diaphragm wall deflection.•Different functional expansions and activation functions were investigated.•ABC, HHO and HGS were significantly optimized FLNN to estimate DWD.
