Abstract
Objective: The oral and maxillofacial complex can be affected by different types of lesions. Clinical examination and radiographic examination allow an interim diagnosis that, in many cases, should be confirmed through histopathological analysis. Few studies report the prevalence of oral lesions, which include histopathological confirmation and the anatomical location of the lesions (I think this statement is wrong). Therefore, the objective of this study was to perform a retrospective study of the lesions diagnosed by biopsy in the oral and maxillofacial complex of patients attended at the Stomatology Clinic (FO / UFF, Nova Friburgo) from 2000 to 2012. The medical records of 2,078 patients with histopathological diagnosis of oral cavity and maxillofacial lesions were evaluated. Clinical data were collected from records regarding the pathologies, age, gender and anatomical location of the lesions. Data analysis was performed in a descriptive way. The results totaled 2078 biopsies, of which 1441 cases (69%) were diagnosed through histopathological examination and 31% (637 cases) were diagnosed clinically and radiographically. Of the cases with known histopathological diagnosis 58% were women, 31% were men and 11% were not informed of sex. The mean age of the studied population was 50.63 years and in 58% of the cases the patients were leucoderma, 31% melanoderma and in 11% of the cases the skin color was not reported. Thus, this study verified that the prevalent lesions were non-neoplastic proliferative processes (percentage), including inflammatory fibrous hyperplasia and their locations
