Specific Phobias in Children and Adolescents
Comprehensive Clinical Psychology(2022)
Abstract
Specific phobias are intense, problematic fears of specific animals, things, or situations. These marked fears are common in youth and often cause significant impairment. Specific phobias may also be a gateway to other forms of psychopathology such as other anxiety disorders. These concerns highlight the need for early evidence-based assessment and treatment. This article details evidence-based assessment, case conceptualization, and treatment for youth with specific phobias, as well as strategies and adaptations for youth with various intellectual and developmental abilities.
