Short-Term and Working Memory

Short-term memory (STM) and working memory (WM) refer to the temporary storage and processing of information in an active and accessible state. These abilities are closely linked to broader cognition and important for complex cognition and goal-oriented behavior yet are highly limited in capacity. Although there have been major advances in understanding the behavioral and neural profiles of STM and WM, debate continues regarding how best to measure and characterize this key aspect of cognition.
