Abstract
To compare vascular reactivity of ophthalmic artery (OA) and middle cerebral artery (MCA) obtained by Doppler, in smoker women during acute and chronic cigarette smoking. Observational and prospective study that evaluated 119 women (82 non-smokers and 37 smokers) with no known disease. Doppler examination was performed by the same observer and calculated: pulsatility index (PI), mean velocity (MV) of OA and MCA as well peak ratio (PR) of OA. The data was collected in two different moments in smoker classified study group (SG): the first at least 2 hours without cigarette smoking, on baseline time/ chronic (BL) and these cond at most 10 minutes after cigarette smoking/acute (ACS). One Doppler exame was performed in non-smoker women (NS), classified as control group (CG). Statistical analysis was performed using ANOVA and Tukey post-test. Variables were expressed as mean ± standard deviation (SD), considering significance level of α ≤ 0.05 and confidence interval of 95%. In smokers group, there was progressive decrease in the impedance of the AO in BL and ACS times compared to CG. The MCA impedance increased in BL, without significant changes in ACS. MV presented no changes in the BL compared to CG, increasing in ACS in both arteries. The means and standard deviation are expressed in table 1. Cigarette consumption increased blood flow in both arteries after acute smoking. However, vascular adaptations to chronic consumption of cigarette caused different responses in both arteries studied, which may be related to different patterns of self-regulation. VP35.02: Table 1.
