Simulated Patients (SP) provide authentic human perspectives in simulation. At the same time, their behavior must be consistent and accurate along a spectrum that is related to the educational and/or assessment objectives of an activity. SPs can be trained for role portrayal, feedback and/or completion of assessment instruments and these aspects can be separate or integrated. There is no evidence to suggest that there is one right way to train SPs and published models often reflect specific contexts. In this chapter, we will focus on the role and responsibilities of the SP educator (SPE) in the process of training SPs for role portrayal, drawing on the Association of Standardized Patient Standards of Best Practice, recognized SP training techniques, and the practices of a diverse international group of SPEs.
