Abstract
Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are common and are associated with numerous poor mental and physical health outcomes. The current chapter reviews the history of the ACEs field and the advancement in knowledge over the last 20 years. Then the impact of ACEs on mental and physical health is summarized. Next, ACEs interventions, trauma informed care, and prevention are discussed. Finally, recommendations for future directions for research are provided and include: definition of ACEs, assessment of ACEs, and universal screening.
