Limit elastic speed analysis of L-FGM rotating disk using Halpin-Tsai and MROM

High speed rotating disk finds its applications in aerospace, marine and many other industries. Stresses and limit analysis of FG disk defines the performance of rotating structures and this can be achieved either by varying the disk profile or by material grading. In present work, the above analysis was carried out by calculating temperature dependent effective mechanical properties. Variation formulation method and linear volume fraction variation of Ni-Al2O3 was considered for its thermo-mechanical benefits and temperature variation in a uniform thickness disk was then calculated. For same temperature variation, the temperature dependent effective modulus was calculated by three methods namely ROM, MROM and Halpin-Tsai, and their results were compared. Lastly temperature dependent yield stress variation was quantified and compared with von-Mises stress to identify the limit speed. Yield stress variation along with stresses in a disk is plotted and results were obtained for different aspect ratios, it was found that limit elastic speed of the disk decreases as the aspect ratio increases.
