Convergence of the finite element analysis using smeared cracking model and linear elastic - brittle failure model

The most commonly applied numerical analysis method to materially nonlinear problem is at present the finite element (FE) method. However, in FE analysis of cracking and fracturing materials, application of the linear elastic-brittle failure model based on the smeared cracking model tends to result in deterioration of convergence and stability. In order to get over the difficulties, we introduced couple of non-linear analysis methods based on damage mechanics to existing FE program. In this paper, we show the computational algorithm of FE programs, efficiency and convergence of the analysis by relatively comparing result of numerical examples.
