General Strategies for Biosynthetic Gene Cluster Identification, Capture, and Heterologous Expression

Abstract This article provides an overview of both well established and emerging (reported within ~ 5 years) tools for biosynthetic gene cluster (BGC) capture and titer improvement. Topics included cover BGC identification, methods for BGC cloning, as well as BGC specific and pleiotropic methods for yield improvement. Recent developments in established hosts, with a special focus on Streptomyces, which serve as the front-line choice for heterologous expression, are also highlighted.
