•Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) have been applied to treat several diseases.•We confirmed effects of MSC on liver grafts from donors after cardiac death (DCD).•MSC transplantation ameliorated the survival rate of liver transplantation from DCD.•MSC could improve the viability of liver grafts from DCD.
