•A Z-scheme photocatalytic system has been fabricated by narrow-band gap MoS2 and N-doped graphene.•The Z-scheme system can harvest near-infrared irradiation.•The Z-scheme system can degrade ammonia under near-infrared light irradiation.•The enhanced activity is attributed to the raised valence band level.
