Abstract
Offshore wind energy is one of the most promising renewable energy resources and there is a growing impetus to develop floating vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs). In particular, the VAWT has important advantages for a deep offshore installation and has the potential to provide a reduction in the cost of energy. Nevertheless, challenges still remain in terms of technological maturity, as the VAWT currently lags behind its horizontal axis counterpart.
