•Vegetation restoration reduces surface albedo, which retains more energy.•The vegetation-albedo feedback mechanism plays an important role in regional climate.•The warming effect of albedo partially offsets the cooling effect of CO2 sink.•Warming risks from albedo need to be considered in the assessment of the ecological benefits of revegetation.
