Abstract
Interest in the role of hierarchy in groups and organizations is on the rise. A number of influential theoretical and empirical papers have been published in recent years investigating how, when, and why hierarchy can affect group outcomes. However, key questions remain, particularly with regards to the dynamics of hierarchy in groups. In this symposium, five papers will be presented that explore the dynamics of hierarchy in groups and organization. The papers examine hierarchical dynamics from multiple perspectives, including antecedents to hierarchical changes and the consequences of these changes for individual employees and group performance.
