Abstract
To examine the prevalence and characteristics of recorded drug allergy from the MedicAlert database in Australia. A retrospective review of MedicAlert data from active subscribers between 1/1/1998 and 22/6/2016. Data included join date, date of birth, sex, medications, medical conditions, allergies and text on MedicAlert emblem. A one month cross sectional analysis identified terms associated with reporting of drug, food and venom allergy, these were used to derive search terms for examining the entire database. Of 61,542 MedicAlert emblems, 26,428 (42.9%) contained one of the common words used to describe an allergy (24,806 allergy/allergies/allergic, 5265 anaphylaxis/ anaphylactic, 3643 both terms). The majority of these referred to a drug allergy (70.0%, n = 18,492). An additional 868 MedicAlert emblems listed a commonly allergenic drug without an allergy descriptor, presumably intended to indicate allergy or intolerance. Numbers, age and sex of the different allergy types: 19,360 MedicAlert emblems referred to drug allergy, 12,665 (65.4%) listed at least one antibiotic and 4797 (24.8%) listed an opioid. The majority of antibiotic allergies were penicillin (65.7%), then Bactrim or “sulphur” (15.8%), cephalosporin (13.5%) erythromycin/clarithromycin (2.8%), trimethoprim(1.8%), and other antibiotics (0.4%). A large proportion of MedicAlert devices are used to convey allergy information. Allergies described are mostly drugs, particularly antibiotics and opioids. Persons with drug names listed on their bracelet are more likely to be female compared with the overall rate of MedicAlert owners, and were older than those with food or venom allergy. The terminology used to signify drug allergy is highly variable, non-standardised and at times ambiguous.
