Abstract
In this chapter, we review preconditioning, which is an adaptive response to a noxious but nonlethal experience that activates an intracellular reaction rendering the tissue tolerant to a subsequent potentially lethal event. Harnessing the power of preconditioning and tolerance has promise as a new arena to develop novel therapies to protect the nervous system from ischemic injury.
