Background: The cancer stem cell (CSC) hypothesis is an emerging concept in cancer research that provides a plausible explanation for the observed phenotypic heterogeneity of many cancers, including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Despite profound therapeutic implications, the prognostic relevance of CSCs and their cellular localization within the tumor formation remain controversial.
