Inhibition of Protein Biosynthesis by Antibiotics

Many antibiotics interfere with the protein biosynthetic process, which means their site of action is the ribosome. The first part of this article briefly surveys the current knowledge of ribosomal structure and function. The second part discusses the inhibition mechanisms of various antibiotics at the ribosomal level, and describes the strategies which the cell has developed in order to acquire resistance against antibiotics.
