Genome-wide analysis of pathogenesis-related protein 1 (PR-1) gene family from Musa spp. and its role in defense response during stresses

•Pathogenesis-related protein-1(PR-1) is a major family of PR proteins, which is induced upon various biotic and abiotic stresses.•Role of PR-1 during stresses is poorly understood and with the availability of whole genome sequences in banana, we have annotated and studied the expression of this protein under various stresses.•This is the first report on genome-wide characterization of PR-1 genes in banana to various stresses.•Expression pattern of selected PR-1 genes in banana revealed its role in biotic and abiotic stresses in general and fusarium wilt in particular.•This study provides significant insight into the functions of PR-1 genes which can be further exploited as a promising candidate for developing multiple stress tolerant banana varieties.
