•We identify 7 different protein sequences of PR39, a pig cathelicidin.•PR39 copies ranges from 2 to 10 copies in the commercial pig population.•PR39 expression correlates with the copy number in the genome.•Increased PR39 gene dosage could enhance protection against infectious diseases.
