•The most common confounding factor when studying MS phenotype is age.•Project Y aimed to include all Dutch MS patients born in a single birth year, 1966.•Project Y focusses on identifying factors associated with phenotypic variability.•We report a current prevalence of 189/100.000 for Dutch MS patients born in 1966.
