Abstract

•Children with congenital cytomegalovirus have higher rates of admission and more costly hospital stays.•The neurodevelopmental sequelae of congenital cytomegalovirus have an on-going impact on hospital utilisation throughout childhood.•Congenital cytomegalovirus increases the risk of mortality amongst children <5 years of age.
