•The key aroma compounds in human milk and infant formula were compared firstly.•The overall odor intensity of human milk was lower than infant formula.•Human milk contained more kinds of odor compounds than infant formula.•It had 14 key aroma active compounds (OAV > 1) in human milk, 11 in infant formula.
