Role of TRPM8 in cold avoidance behaviors and brain activation during innocuous and nocuous cold stimuli

•Innocuous cold induces avoidance behaviors in WT mice but not TRPM8 KO animals.•Nocuous cold induces cold avoidance behaviors in WT and TRPM8 KO mice.•Innocuous cold increases Fos in the cerebrum and hypothalamus in WT mice.•Innocuous cold does not change Fos in the cerebrum in TRPM8 KO mice.•Nocuous and innocuous cold does not induce Fos in the hypothalamus of TRPM8 KO mice.
