•Influence of brands on discriminant model for milk adulteration was demonstrated.•NIR discriminant analysis model robustness was sensitive to changes in milk brands.•Asynchronous features sliced at adulterant and pure milk highlight the discriminant.•2D-COS slice spectra was more robust to brands changes than the conventional model.
