•A flexible SERS substrate was developed for rapid detection of pesticide residues.•The substrate was highly sensitive due to the enhanced electromagnetic fields.•The substrate can identify thiram as low as 5 × 10-7 M.•The substrate was successfully used for detection of pesticide residues.
