•135 transcription factors were reported to drive the cellular state transition process during zebrafish cardiac regeneration.•Most regulators are activated in the first post-injury days indicating that the transition from a non-regenerative to a regenerative state occurs promptly.•The cardiac regeneration program interferes with the microRNA machinery.
