Abdominal Hernia in Equine: Animal Level Risk Factors and Repair Using Polypropylene Mesh

•There is paucity in the prevlanece and risk factors associated with the occurrence if abdmonial hernia in different equine species especially donkeys, and mules.•The efficacy of polypropylene mesh for the surgical treatment of abdominal hernia in different equine species is evaluated in this study.•This study highlighted the prevalence and risk factors associated with abdominal hernia in horses, donkeys and mules.•Polypropylene mesh hernioplasty may be an alternative to the treatment of equine abdominal hernia.•Recognition of the potential risk factors associated with abdominal hernia in different equine species may be helpful to construct the best preventive measures.
