•VI-RADS is a promising accurate tool for predicting muscle invasion.•VI-RADS ≥ 3 has the maximum diagnostic performance for suspected MIBC.•MRI characteristics influence the accuracy of VI-RADS.•The number of radiologists reading the MRI does not change the accuracy of VI-RADS.•VI-RADS can improve the staging evaluation of bladder cancer.
