A statistical evaluation of Earth-observation-based composite drought indices for a localized assessment of agricultural drought in Pakistan

•Composite drought indices were assessed with wheat production as a proxy of drought.•Earth observations and model outputs can identify drought in arid regions.•Drought indices perform differently between rainfed and irrigated agricultural land.•Short term precipitation and soil moisture metrics are important to drought indices.•Seasonal patterns appear in the amount of contribution for variables considered.
