•Many runners experience running-related injuries (RRIs).•Novice runners with pronated feet are at an increased risk of RRIs.•Foot kinematics during running in this group could be divided into three subgroups.•These subgroups also had differences in the morphology of intrinsic foot muscles.•These subgroups may differ in their resistance to RRIs and RRI types.
