Amazon deforestation and urban expansion: Simulating future growth in the Manaus Metropolitan Region, Brazil.

•Deforestation dynamics and urban growth differ among municipalities in the Manaus Metropolitan Region.•Simulated deforestation is distributed close to previously deforested areas and roads.•Protected areas are important to contain deforestation and urban expansion in the Amazon.•The size of simulated urban patches increases in areas with a higher deforestation and near the roads.
