•Developed and validated novel GC-MS method for eight NAs in rat faeces.•SPE with two kinds of solid phase adopted to eliminate the interference of matrix.•A significant increase in levels of NAs observed in the faeces of rats with colorectal cancer.•High nitrite diets contributed to an abnormal increase in NAs.
