Abstract
•Individuals affected by Cornelia de Lange Syndrome (CdLS) are at increased risk of social impairments.•Social impairments in CdLS are characterized by social anxiety, selective mutism, extreme shyness that show an upward trend with age and IQ and exhibit only partial overlappings with autistic features.•Fine-grained behavioral observation of structured social interactions is the most suitable method to detect social anxiety indicators in syndromic individuals with intellectual disabilities.•Longitudinal studies are needed to explore age-related features of social anxiety among CdLS individuals.
